Pros and Cons of SPC Flooring: What the Specs Actually Tell You Before You Buy SPC flooring gets recommended constantly — and for mostly the right reasons. But the way it gets explained online does buyers a disservice. “Durable, waterproof, easy to maintain” describes half the products on the market. What you actually need to…
What Makes a Subfloor “Good” for Vinyl Flooring? The subfloor is the structural panel layer that sits on top of your floor joists and beneath the finished flooring. It is not the same as the underlayment, which is a thin cushioning layer placed directly under the vinyl. The subfloor is load-bearing. It determines how much…
How to Prevent Mold and Mildew on Vinyl Flooring Vinyl flooring does not grow mold. The PVC surface is non-porous, which means mold spores cannot feed on the material itself. That distinction matters, because it changes where you look for the problem — and where prevention actually begins. The mold risk lives underneath the floor,…
How to Choose the Right Molding for Vinyl Flooring Molding for vinyl flooring is not a decorative afterthought. It is a structural requirement that exists because every floating vinyl floor — whether LVP, SPC, or WPC — expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. Without the correct transition pieces covering those perimeter gaps,…
Vinyl flooring buckles when the forces acting on a plank — thermal expansion, moisture-driven swelling, subfloor movement, or adhesive failure — exceed the floor’s ability to absorb them. The plank has nowhere to go except upward. That is the entire phenomenon. Everything else in this guide is an explanation of which force is responsible in…
When people search for “cork vs rubber backed vinyl flooring,” they are usually asking one of two very different questions. The first is whether to install cork flooring or rubber-backed vinyl flooring as their finished floor surface. The second — and more common — is whether the backing material attached to the underside of a…
Water will not ruin the vinyl plank itself. A single plank can be submerged for days without swelling, warping, or breaking apart. That is not the problem. The problem is that your floor is not one plank — it is hundreds of planks clicked together, laid over a subfloor that is not waterproof. Water does…
Vinyl flooring is marketed as waterproof. That claim is technically true and practically misleading at the same time. The planks themselves — particularly SPC and WPC rigid core products — will not absorb water or swell. But the floor as a system, meaning the planks together with the seams, the perimeter, the subfloor beneath them,…
Concrete is the most common subfloor surface in American homes — slab foundations account for the majority of ground-level construction — yet it is also one of the most misunderstood surfaces when it comes to choosing a finished floor. The question of what flooring goes directly on concrete is not just a product-selection question. It…
